The laws are really tough these days. I work in retail and unless you have security staff with cameras and stuff, it's really not worth putting them in. They can sue for all kinds of crap. If I saw someone and I wasn't at work, I'd say nothing. It's not my business, and sooner or later they will get caught properly.

I have told the nearest store assistant and left it to the store to deal with.
Maybe next time you see it happening (if you aren't working that is) you could approach the Manager and ask if they had ever considered hiring a "shopper/store detective". Some of them look so obvious, that you think they should have a little 90 year old lady or a young lad in a hoodie to watch for thieves.

This is a bit like your neighbor ignoring the guy using your garden rake to smash your window and break in to your home while you are out working. You can bet your backside you would want your neighbor to call the police or go over and stop the break and entry.

So, in that light, is it ok to let someone steal from your employer, or from you personally. I think you'll find the answer is a resounding no at all levels.

Should you stop them? Sure. You work your backside off for the small amount of money you get in your pocket each week, it's not ok for someone to come in and benefit for free. Society has established rules for things like this.

If you don't want to be part of society, then one always has the option of going back to ground and growing crops and smashing rocks together for sparks.

I would like to think I would stop them... but, knowing me, I would make a judgment call. What are they stealing?- food? If they looked hungry and like they couldn't afford to buy the item, I most likely wouldn't say anything, but would pay for the item myself (unless it became an every day sort of thing, then I would approach them myself and tell them they need to stop stealing or I'd turn them in).

Of course. Shoplifters cause prices to rise for the rest of us. I was talking to someone recently who was laughing about stealing from large chains. She didn't seem to think there was any harm as they wouldn't miss it. She wasn't expecting my reaction.

All businesses, large or small take theft very seriously and they won't allow their profit margins to fall, they just raise prices.

To show you how seriously I take honesty, if my own nieces or nephews were shopping with me and told me they'd stolen something, I would march them straight back to the shop, I would apologise, I would make them apologise and I would expect them to accept any consequences that followed.

Yes, I would stop them. That is stealing, and the only thing that does is raise the price of merchandise for those of us who work hard to pay for it!

It might be uncomfortable, but I would report shoplifting. Otherwise I would be taking part in it also by not doing anything to stop it.

I've never seen someone to steal from the shops but I've seen people who are stealing from others in the bus. It's kind of risky to do something because if they catch you you may be in a lot of trouble. But I've told some people that are robbed, with discretion of course not to get caugt by the "robbers".

NO
I once worked in a courner shop in the bus station and they told me on my first day that if I saw someone shoplifting I had a duty to report it then added as an after thought that if I was wrong I could be sued for false accusation.
Needless to say I never saw annthing

Without doubt I would shop them. I don't know if this is generally known but when shops price goods the price you pay takes into consideration the goods that have been stolen. The other thought you might have would be how would you like them stealing from you.
