i find it so funny that a few days before xmas everyone rushes to the supermarker and buys enough food to last you 2 weeks inc pints of milk and loafs of bread like the shops aint gonna open til newyear when they close on xmas eve evenign and reopen the day after boxing day. some shops open christmas and boxing day like the spar or the petrol shops...its so funny.

yep, some people think they're going to starve! or are stuck in a time warp in the good old days when shops didn't open at night or Sundays lol

Siege mentality. Here's a good laugh, take a friend to your weekly supermarket shop and choose a product, say sugar or toilet roll, then as you are going round the supermarket talk in loud voices about how there is a "shortage" of your chosen product. Then, when you get to the checkout, see how many trolleys have an excess of the product you've been stirring up the "shortage" about. You'll be surprised.

We always seem to panic buy if we know we cant get to our usual source of supply in every 24hr period. Not sure why we do it, unless it is to upset everybody else that didnt get an extra pint or loaf in!

I think it is due to the old days when transport was not the way that it used to be, and shops were not allowed to open on sundays or after 5.30 etc.. so everyone bought enough food to last a good week or so or they would starve. As they say bad habits die hard!

Don't worry it's not just the Brits. I live in Austria, where the shop really ARE shut at night and on Sundays. So first thing Monday morning and 5pm on Saturday you would think the shops are about to be shut for a week, with so many people panic buying. Just human nature I guess, the shops are going to be shut let's make sure we have enough!!
