My girlfriend and I are heading to Rome for five days, anybody have some good suggestions for e.g. factory outlets etc around Rome? (ideally within reach of public transport...)

there are actually day trips which take you via coach to outlets..when you get to rome go to a visitors centre/information centre and they will have either a leaflet or board with the companies that do it and the time/price/where they leave etc on it
