I want to buy a cheap run around, but don't know much about cars. What should I look out for, so I don't get ripped off.
I can't take someone with me to view cars as my friends are as ignorant about cars as I am.

What do you define as "cheap"?
Always check the following The Mot, The service History, Check the log book against the VIN number on the car
Check for changes in paint colour
Get a HPI check done

If you want cheap, you won't get much. As long as it runs good, don't worry about how it looks or the mileage

Check your local craigslist daily and get something that is fuel efficient and low in maintenance. Preferably get a japanese car from either Honda or Toyota.

Saturns are also good.

Once you have a few cars in your price range, research them through the Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds.

Also (and I cannot stress this enough) get your car checked out by a mechanic before you buy!!

I suggest doing some internet research. Find the type of car you want then find the lowest price for it, print it out, and take it to the dealership. There are several sites that teach you how not to get ripped off. Like, not letting them suck you into the extended warranty or any extras that sound weird. Kia is probably makes the cheapest cars that I can think of. Good luck.

Skodas are good and cheap.
Run arounds, ford fiesta, skoda felicia, fiat punto, vauxhall corsa.
Try to stick to a manual car as automatics are expensive to get parts for in the uk. Try and get a car with a service history. Long mot. Look underneath and around wheel arches and suspenssion points for rust or corrosion. Check the tyre tread is good. Look for paint work that doesnt match the rest of the car, may indicate a previous accident. Check the clutch when driving it, put it up a gear and accelerate, preferable on an upward slope, if the car sounds like its revving instead of stalling then the clutch may be on the way out. Drive on a flat road thats fairly even, take both hands off the steering wheel, if it veers one way or the other, then there may be wheel alignment or ballancing issues. Check that no big cloud of smoke comes out the exhaust when you rev it. Make sure the doors dont fall off when you close them. Make sure the lights work! and the windscreen wipers are good. Make sure the colour matches your boots Wink And take the oil cap off if theres condensation on the inside of it then it may not be too good. Look at the rubber peddal wear as well and the wear and tear of the seats. If you know a mechanic pop it buy on your test drive and ask them to quickly check it over.

Cheap is very different in many peoples eyes, but say if you had a budget of £1000 you should look for corsa, 106 or fiesta. For that you will not get much that i why you should rather spend £2000 for which you should look for a nice polo or corsa. To get a cheap run around look for the 1.0l models and you should get cheap tax and insurance. For 2k you should look for ones with x plate or better really. Now if you were going to spend more get a 206 or corsa, if you want something bigger a focus would be best. In all cars look for getting a full service history, MOT, HPI check if they do(otherwise u do one) ask if they give warrenty so you are covered and bargin with as much as you can. Take a friend anyway when you first go to look at the car, now even though he may not know anything they may pick up on things that you have not noticed. If you really like the car tell them you will be back and come back with
http://www.theaa.com/motoring-advice/vehicle-inspections.html
they will check the car for you for your peace of mind. It may cost you some money but it is better that it costing you your whole car or your life. If it is all ok point out all that is wrong with the car (check all electrics before buying) and tell him it will knock the pounds off. Plus you really want to avoid french cars like punto, they are cr4p seriouslyYou should be set, if you want some more help email me anytime
