Just download something for free. Then you don't have to buy anything at all.
You should try AntiVir though. It's probably the best free antivirus/anti spyware utility you can find.

If its spyware you've got as opposed to viruses, download for free Super Antispyware, that will soon get rid of any malware.

Yiasou, Nik. Ti kanete, kala;
Arguably the best anti-virus programs you can buy are NOD32 or Kaspersky. Both will keep you pretty safe from most malware, not just viruses.
With either of those two an anti-spyware program isn't so essential but there are some good freebies you can download, once your pc is clean, such as AVG AntiSpyware and SuperAntiSpyware. These will detect and delete much malware, but the free versions don't stop it getting on. Use SpywareBlaster for that. If you want to buy an antispyware program I'd suggest CounterSpy. This is pro-active rather than re-active.
Get a good firewall which stops your personal information leaking out, such as OnlineArmor or Comodo.
If you use search engines, such as Google, SiteAdvisor will warn you about 'bad' websites.
A Hosts file will stop your pc connecting to known 'bad' sites.
Firefox with NoScript is a safer way to browse the internet.
It's essential to keep all your programs up-to-date with the latest security patches. Secunia PSI will alert you when new updates are available.
If you have a badly infected pc it's possible that a new anti-virus or anti-spyware program won't install properly. Run one/both of these free on-line scans first and see what you can clean off:
NOD32: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
BitDefender: http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
If you're having really serious problems, Bleeping Computer is a good support forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html
I'll put a few links below so you can checkout what I've said / download any of the programs:

For anti virus i recommend F secure, Kaspersky 7, Bit Defender 2008, these are by far the best on the market.
For anti spyware the only one i would recommend is webroot anti spyware ver. 5.5, this has the best detection rate of any anti virus around. far better than any freebie download.
