Some free ones are runescape and maplestory, although I wouldn't recommend either of them. Guild wars is a good one with no monthly fee. just pay for the game itself one time.

If you have a decent imagination, try the older text-based ones. Many of htem are actually far more detailed than the graphical ones (which stands to reason, really)

You could always try runescape (i'll be honest with you its not the best though) but if your really asking for quality you will have to pay
personally though if you take my advice and buy one get World of warcraft because you get your moneys worth there

Try battleon.com I dont know if its actually any good or not but its free so theres no harm looking. It also has links to other gaming sites.
