More often than not - I walk out of a shop grinding my teeth at the (at best) ineptitude of the staff or (at worst) total hostility or ignorant attitude.

I see all over the premises signs telling me that the management are proud of their awards for Staff Training - which is why the store opens late one morning a week. But apart from these fictional pieces of decor - there is nothing to tell me that the staff have had even the smallest hint of customer service training.

Except this morning!
A young polish man who was on his own at the petrol station went more than the extra mile to be pleasant helpful and considerate. I was so taken aback by the unfamiliar good manners, perfect English - and strangest of all - HE SMILED!

Ain't life grand?
One day that young man is going to own a string of petrol stations if that is where he is going to apply himself.
The others I spoke of? Well - the fact they were actually gainfully employed and not on benefits is the best we can hope for.

Morrisons and Aldi and Tesco staff are always helpful and polite to me. The older Sainsburys staff are good too but the younger ones aren't. Argos staff on the whole are rude although there are a few diamonds. My local shop are Asian and are not so great!!

a few days ago at the supermarket, when the girl at the cash register started to wrap all my frozen stuff in separate little bags so it wouldn't melt all over the rest.

Very bad for the environment, but a very thoughtful gesture.

I went to a restaurant with my boyfriend a while back and the waiter who served us was really nice, he smiled and was funny and polite. It was very good to see someone like that.
On the whole I don't have many complaints about staff at shops, I work at Boots and for the first few weeks I'd started I was always being told to smile, we HAVE to do it all the time. Sometimes it can be hard if you've had a long stressful day and you just wanna be at home with a nice cuppa.

Having moved to France, it is a different world, you are always greeted with Bon jour, and even if you do not buy, they thank you and say au revoir to a couple...I came back for Christmas, and was appauled at the service given by most shop keepers, My French girlfriend was disgusted..
Its about time that customers were treated with respect they deserve, and not a pain in the backside, although M&S seem to help

On Saturday i went to the garden centre to get some seeds for the summer. I have had a real job trying to find a particular variety of flower, and have trawled all the local garden centres local to me, only to be told "No Sorry, Don't look like we do them" by some young little oik, who wouldn't know his arse from his elbow anyway!!
Well, as i said on Saturday we went to a place to be great ed with a very friendly welcome and very knowledgeable staff who actually know what they are talking about.
Will go there every time from now on!

I complained about the Direct TV service that we ordered. Instead of the cut rates we were offered, due to their own ineptitude, we had to pay the full amounts, almost a scam that I insisted they did,.

It raised our bill from 39 dollars to 42 dollars, a trivial amount. I was surprised when a large package came in the mail. It was a portable VCR/DVD player with all the attachments.
It will come in handy on my boat or the SUV.

When I applied for fuel assistance there was a very nice but stern lady who denied the application. When I questioned it she became very defensive. I asked to speak to someone else as I could tell she was not having a good day. A very nice young lady came over reviewed my application and came back with an apology and an approval and two carbon monoxide detectors for the home. She also gave me information on money that was available for reinsulating my home and a free winter analysis of the home. I felt sorry for the people stuck with lady #1.

The last time was just last week. But first the sad part.

I was shopping for a dress shirt and they were all labeled S, M, X, XL, XXL. Not being overly familiar with the sizes I asked what size XXL was expecting something like 18 to 18 1/2, what I got was "It means Double Extra Large". I guess I forgot to erase the STUPID from my forehead.

But, the good one (actually several) is at my favorite restaurants. They greet my by name, know what I am most likely looking for and always smile and engage me in conversation. And generally make me feel like I have increased the level of goodness in their day.

The last time i was wonderfully surprised by the service received in a shop was when i was in Orlando Florida in June 2006, it was just wonderful, my experience in nearly every shop i went into was the same they were so so friendly, i walked in and the ladies instead of looking you up and down with disgust (which is what tends to happen in shops in Scotland) - they smiled and "How are you today?" - like they were genuinely interested as to how I was. They showed me what was on special offer - helped me with sizing, didn't rush me out the door - in fact the people were so nice i could've picked them up and put them in my pocket and kept them!!! - I tell you if people want to learn customer services they should all take a trip to Florida.

Also at the gas srtation. Just before my car got sick, I filled up, while gas was pumping I decided to wash my windshield. A young man came running up and said "let me help you with that " he cleaned every window outside and the inside of the windshield. Refused a tip and told me to have a nice day and come back again. I certainly will. Next time my daughter gassed up she went there, made a point of telling the manager about it and assured him that he now had two new customers.

We get great service and respect in all the shops in our village, mind you it`s never a quick trip as everyone is chatting and passing on gossip and the latest village news.

Loads of times. I find if you are pleasant and cheerful with the staff in any establishment they will in most cases respond in a pleasant and helpful way.
